Background

Dr. Shyamal Gomes is currently Professor in Human Resource Management Programme at XISS Ranchi. He was the programme head from 2022-2025. His core teaching areas are Strategic Management, Total Quality Management, Human Resource Learning and Development, Competency Based HRM, Business Ethics and International Human Resource Management. He has completed his Doctoral programme on International Human Resource Management entitled “Social Cultural Profile of Human Resources (Indian) in a Multinational Industrial Project who are not native of the area”, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and obtained Ph.D. degree in 2000, from the Faculty of Social Science, Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. He has done his Masters in Social Anthropology from Calcutta University and also 2 years Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from IBMR Calcutta (Currently affiliated by WBTU). He is also graduated in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from College of Professional Management (CPM), Britain (1997) and Management Teachers’ Programme on Strategic Management from Strategic Forum, IIM Lucknow (2010). He is also a master trainer of Total Quality Management.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining XISS (2008), Dr. Gomes worked for more than 14 years in Industries like ABGCO, Saudi Arabia, Usha Martin (KGVK) Limited, Ranchi and National Developmental Organization like SKC in Calcutta as a Human Resource Specialist (Social Coordinator) and Learning and Development Manager. He has expertise in Corporate Governance & Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Auditing and Development Programme Evaluation. He has published 23 articles in National and International Journals and 6 case studies in association with IIM Raipur, Economic Times (GSMC 2014, 16) and other Universities like NEHU (2018) etc. In 2019, Dr. Gomes achieved ‘Special Mentioned Case Award” for the Case “Kalu Policewala – the symbol of good Governance: a case study” in the 7th PAN IIM World Management Conference, Rohatak. Dr. Gomes is also associated with JJDMS (In house research journal of XISS) as associated editor and jointly edited combined volumes of JJDMS since 2019, published by Catholic Press, Ranchi. Presently Dr. Gomes is writing two books “Beyond Classroom: Learning Paradigms in the context of Nurturing Professionals with a difference” and “Competency with AI in HRM”.

Achievements

In 2009, Dr. Shyamal Gomes received the ‘Rashtriya Gaurav Award’ from the India Friendship Society, New Delhi, in recognition of his excellence in management teaching and contributions to social work. Alongside his teaching and research responsibilities, he served as the Coordinator of Social Service Field Work (HR) at XISS from 2008 to 2018. In 2014, he was empanelled by ICFAI University, Jharkhand, as a Ph.D. guide for management scholars. Subsequently, on 8 August 2016, both the All India Management Association (AIMA) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), a Central University, empanelled Dr. Gomes as an external Ph.D. guide in Human Resource Management and allied management disciplines. In 2018, he became an honorary member of the Board of Studies at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Deemed University), Ranchi. More recently, on 16 February 2026, Dr. Gomes was conferred the prestigious “Best Professor in Human Resource Management Award” at the 34th Edition of the World HRD Congress held in Mumbai, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to teaching, unwavering dedication, and steadfast commitment to Human Resource Development and social service. XISS also honoured him with the “Excellence Award for Governance” for his significant contributions to Institutional development and governance excellence, this year.
