Sudeep Kumar (Ph.D)
Dr. Sudeep Kumar did his schooling from A.A.M. Children’s Academy, Katihar (Bihar) and St. Xavier’s School, Sahibganj (Jharkhand); and plus two from Manav Bharati India International School, New Delhi. He has done his B.Sc. (H) and M. Sc. in Anthropology from Hansraj College, University of Delhi; and M. Phil and Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi. The title of the Ph.D. thesis was “Caste Mobility and Political Process with Special Reference to Political Participation of Women: A Case of Jatavs of Abupur of Ghaziabad District, Uttar Pradesh.” He is UGC-NET qualified and is a recipient of ICSSR regular Doctoral fellowship, and P.C. Biswas Best Paper Presentation Award in Anthropology. During his affiliation in the Department Dr. Kumar taught “Anthropological Research Methods” and “Society and Culture” to the UG and PG students of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi.
Before joining the Department of Research & Publications at Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi, Dr. Kumar worked as State Level Investigator at FAITH Health Care Pvt. Ltd; as Research Officer in Voluntary Health Association of Delhi (VHAD); and as Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Delhi. He has worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (Government of India), ICMR, WHO, CARE and UNDP. As part of the core team he was responsible for planning, implementation and documentation of findings of the research projects on Nutrition and Health Issues of Mother and Adolescent Girls, Violence against Women, and Suicide Behaviour. At grassroots level Dr. Kumar possesses intensive rural and urban field work research experience among the scheduled tribes and multi-caste villages in Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
Dr. Kumar joined XISS in 2010 as Assistant Professor-cum-Associate Editor in the Department of Research and Publications. On the basis of his performance and skill he was also assigned to be part of the prestigious JRD Tata Chair at XISS in the capacity of Assistant Professor JRD Tata Chair. Dr. Kumar has attended and presented research papers in many seminars, conferences and workshops at National and International levels. He has published more than 25 research papers in both national and international journals. Dr. Kumar’s area of interest include – Gender and Political Behaviour; Empowerment of Dalits; Social Mobility and Social Change; Qualitative Research Methodologies; Socio-Cultural Aspects of Suicide Behaviour; and CSR and Sustainable Development. Dr. Kumar has more than 11 years of post Ph.D. research experience in the areas of his interest. Recently, Dr. Kumar’s research paper entitled “Water Resource Management through Collective Action: A Study in the Context of Water User Group among the Tribes of Eastern India” has been accepted by the Academic Review Committee Chair for presentation in the 15th Biannual Global Conference of International Association of Commons (IASC 2015).
Dr. Kumar is a member of the Gender Community in the UNDP Solution Exchange Programme. He has been empanelled as Research Supervisor by the ICFAI University of Jharkhand and is currently supervising Two Ph.D. Research Scholars. He is also the Reviewer of Jamshedpur Research Review. He has also contributed chapters in the PG course of IGNOU study material on Anthropology. Dr. Kumar is life member of Indian Anthropological Association (IAA), Delhi; Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Kolkata; and Life Associate Member of Delhi Psychiatric Society (DPS). Dr. Kumar is the Associate Editor of the Jharkhand Journal of Development and Management Studies (JJDMS).
