Fr. Alexius Ekka did his studies at St. John’s High School, Ranchi and at St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi graduating with English Honours. He joined the Society of Jesus and after the prescribed spiritual formation, including Bachelor of Philosophy and Theology, was ordained a Priest on 27th April 1985. During this time he also did his Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Rural Development from XISS. He was appointed as Assistant Director at XISS in June 1986. He then did his M. Phil from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai in 1993 in Social Sciences on Displacement, Resettlement and Rehabilitation at Sardar Sarovar in Gujarat. Thereafter he joined Indian Social Institute, (ISI) New Delhi in 1994 and did his Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1998 in Sociology on the thesis Development, Displacement, and Rehabilitation at the Subarnarekha Multipurpose Project, Chandil in East Singhbhum, Jharkhand.
He was a Senior Research Fellow in the Tribal Studies Unit at Indian Social Institute, New Delhi. In 1998 he was the India Delegate at the Study Meeting at Sri Lanka organized by Asian Productivity Council. He was also in the Advisory Board of the Planning Commission on Tribal Affairs from 1999 – 2002 and in the Team of Independent Election Observers of the Civil Society in the J&K State Assembly Elections in 2002.
Fr. Alexius came back to XISS as Director Research in 2003 and was given the dual charge of Assistant Director in 2007. He became the Director of XISS on 1st September 2009. He strengthened the Research and Exchange Programme with the University of Antwerp, Belgium and was Scholar in Residence under IOB, Institute of Development Policy and Management, University of Antwerp in 2006. Thereafter he started research collaboration with the University of Antwerp on Human Rights violation on account of development induced displacement in Jharkhand. He also streamlined the annual Summer Internship of the students of the Law Faculty from the University of Antwerp, Belgium at XISS and the Course on Human Rights for Development for the students of Rural Management, XISS at the Universities in Belgium. He was one of the delegates from India at the World Social Forum in 2005 held at Porto Alegre, Brazil and is a regular member of the “International Association of Jesuit Business Schools” (IAJBS) since 2009. In this regard he presented papers at Ateneo De Manila, in the Philippines in 2010; at St. Louis University, USA in 2013 and at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea in 2014. He has also linked XISS to the National and the International Jesuit Alumni Associations, especially by sending a delegation from XISS to the World Union of Jesuit Alumni (WUJA) at Medellin, Columbia in August 2013. He is the Secretary of ‘Xavier Association of Management Institutes’ (XAMI) in India. Most recently he has made XISS a permanent member of ‘Indian Association of Autonomous Business Schools’ (IAABS). Similarly, through the ‘Maruti Suzuki XISS Avanish Kumar Dev Trust’, he has put the Institute in the national limelight. And at XISS he started the Central Placement Cell in 2010. In the civil society he is the founder Secretary of ‘Jharkhand Alternative Development Forum’ (JADFO) and of ‘Jharkhand Sadbhavna Manch’ (JSM). He has publications of 22 books and Research Projects as well as more than 30 articles in the national and international books and journals. He is also called by his short name – Alex. He has been honoured with a few national and international awards. He blends academics with social activism like the two sides of the same coin for the transformation of a just society in the true Jesuit spirit of excellence and putting the last first through the Institute’s maxim of being a Leaven in the Dough.
